Narcissistic – We value humanity and its art more. Before you start slinging ink at me, let me explain: It cannot as long as humans remain narcissistic, self-limiting cheaters. Artificial Intelligence, no matter how advanced, will not break poetry. Will they take art as well? It is easy to answer this question by looking at human nature. We can only expect these systems to become more capable in the coming years.īut will art and writing lose value as we are out-competed by the lightning-fast, dirt-cheap, ultra-customized dependability of AI systems? Machines have taken vast amounts of manual labor off of our hands. You can find a great deal of experiments in poetry written by this model here. It can imitate the style of any author, even yourself, depending on what you start it out with. Inspired by the entirety of accessible human writing, this model can complete any prompt you give it, whether poetry or prose. Then it seeks to digest, understand, and imitate it. Here is the gist of GPT-3: A computer takes in a vast diversity of human history, new, literature, poetry, and prose. In constant revision, this machine learning model is a flawed yet impressive display of human-like capabilities. What happens when computers cease to be mere artistic tools and instead become artists? When the pen becomes a writer, is the writing still yours? And if the writings ever wrote themselves, what good would we be, slower, fleshier authors?īut these worries are nothing but armchair philosophy unless computers truly can make real artistic assertions, think deeply, and create beautifully as humans can. This poses an overwhelming flood of questions to present and future artists, myself included. However, some would rather call them artistic collaborators. New AI systems have broken the “artistic tool” analogy altogether. Nearly as early as their invention, computers have been used as artistic tools by pioneering technical artists such as Manfred Mohr, Jason Salavon, and Frieder Nake. As this is an Inkslinger blog and not a data science fan club, I will avoid using more specific terminology than this. To put it simply, the field of artificial intelligence seeks to bring computers closer to humans in their ability to think, reason, problem-solve, and create. Some artists look to it as marking the dawn of a new artistic age, while others look to it as one might look to the moon if it started rapidly growing bigger in the sky. Now, AI is entering the realm of the arts, whether written, visual, audible. It used to reside in the domain of science fiction before roaming into real computer science. The two most popular letters in technology news are A and I.
